You may have noticed struggle with communication.  Friends, family, and teachers may have mentioned these things:

  • Lagging behind peers in verbal or nonverbal skills
  • Hard to understand / sound substitutions / sound omissions / sound distortions
  • Has sounds that call attention to themselves after the age of 5
  • A history of otitis media / ear infections
  • Struggle speaking fluently / stuttering
  • Struggle sharing an experience / telling a story about an event
  • Struggle understanding a story told by another person
  • Struggle answering the questions of another person
  • Distracted easily
  • Struggle following directions
  • Gap between potential and performance
  • Struggle learning to read
  • Struggle writing
  • Behavioral problems / meltdowns / temper tantrums / anxiety
  • Social difficulties / anxiety / isolation
From time to time, everyone needs help! Help is appreciated! In my first sessions with a child, I explain my job. What I say depends, of course, on our goals. For example, I tell them that it’s my job to help make school as easy as can be. Or that it’s my job to help them work on any hard sounds so everyone can understand the very important things they have to say.
