I’m grateful for parents who want the best for their child.
That’s the reason I’m asked to become involved with families.
When special days roll around, I think of the things children need from parents. Children need to hear “I love you” and “I’m proud of you.” They need to hear “I understand”. At the same time, they need to hear, “That’s your responsibility” and “You can do it!” There’s a tricky balance.
I do the pushing in therapy. I’ll tell you when and how to push at home. Making changes in speech and language is hard work! And dang there’s no magic easy button!
Meanwhile, your job is to provide hugs and squeezes and cuddles. Add lots of “I love you”. Later, you may hear how grateful they are for everything.
