Often, we wonder if our child’s life skills are on track. There is so much to be learned to prepare a child for living in the world. I recently saw a really helpful guide that covers life skills needed to age 18. I thought these would be helpful to share. Today, I share life skills for 2 to 5 year olds. Of course, much language is involved in performing all of these daily skills.
Ages 2 to 3
- Put toys away
- Get dressed (with help)
- Put dirty clothes in hamper
- Help set the table
- Use a fork, spoon, and butter knife
- Carry plate to the sink after eating
- Brush teeth and wash face (with help)
- Wipe up spills (with help)
Now come life skills for ages 4 to 5. Last on the list is swimming skills. I chose this picture of children swimming because I wanted to emphasize the importance of water safety. At these ages, it is time for swimming lessons if they have not begun.
Ages 4 to 5
- Help with simple cleaning at home (dusting, wiping)
- Help with basic laundry tasks (sorting dirty clothes, matching clean socks)
- Choose own clothing and get dressed
- Make the bed
- Feed and water pets
- State full name, address, and phone number
- Make an emergency call to 911
- Perform basic swimming skills
