Over and over and over, I recommend this book to parents.  The Read-Aloud Handbook by Jim Trelease.  It shares summaries of books by age and interest and particularly books that are great to read aloud TOGETHER.  Reading aloud gives opportunities to teach many things — vocabulary, values, sequencing, and expressive language, just to mention a few.  AND you can share adventures!  Most of these books are chapter books.  You read in chunks which means the next day, you review what you read the previous day.  Having the child answer questions and explain the story is a super experience for the child, in terms of using language.  This book is a fabulous resource.  Every parent should have a copy!  So worthy of praise and recommendations!
