Family time has changed dramatically since the mobile phone came into use in the 1990s. Families are incredibly busy with school and special classes and sports. And while parents are delivering children to events, cell phones demand attention that previously went to children.
In my work as a Speech and Language Pathologist, I focus on helping children tell stories and express their thoughts, ideas, and feelings. School is telling stories! History is telling stories!
Much research is going on about one time of the day that can involve lots of storytelling. That time is dinnertime! Researchers have found that kids who eat with their adults do better in school and have larger vocabularies. There are emotional benefits, too, such as lower rates of depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
It’s the atmosphere at the table that encourages these benefits. Not whether it’s take out or home prepared food!
I’ve prepared this resource as a way of encouraging storytelling around the dinner table. Talking Topics includes questions for the adults, questions for the kids, and the questions for the entire family.
