The concept of time is difficult for children because they cannot see time! Consider providing pictures of the day or expectations for the day. You might hang a monthly calendar like this one in a strategic place — like on the refrigerator or wall of your child’s room.
Write on the calendar what your child will be doing each day. Draw pictures or add stickers to add meaning … so your child can “read” the pictures….such as a school for school days, a ballerina for dance, a soccer ball for soccer practice, a church for your worship day, and a Boy Scout.
The concept of time is very difficult for children to understand because time cannot be seen — except for Day and Night! Making the calendar together helps a child take ownership of the project as does reviewing the calendar at bedtime for the next day.
Remember to teach these words: TODAY, YESTERDAY, TOMORROW, TONIGHT, IN THE MORNING, EARLY, EVENING, DAWN, SUNSET. Children enjoy seeing the plan for their time.
