Writing

I’m writing about what I’ve learned.

My first project is a series of books about Parkinson’s Disease.

Why Parkinson’s Disease?  Why me?  Why now?

Because I appreciate lots of people with Parkinson’s Disease.

Because one day after a voice group, I was approached by four people.

Some background.  After having my babies, I was invited to provide free speech groups all over Dallas for the nonprofit Dallas Area Parkinsonism Society.  The person who invited me said, “We’ve heard you might be available to do groups for our people with Parkinson’s.”  Then she added, “… and we’ve heard that you have a little daughter.  She would be welcome to come with you!  Everyone would love to see a little one regularly!”

I considered that invitation for about two seconds before accepting!

On a group day, I packed my daughter’s lunch in her pink Hello Kitty lunchbox.  While we worked, my little girl ate and quietly played with something that we brought as entertainment.  She also watched the adults very closely,  When the session ended, she visited with folks around her.  She grew up with at least 20 grandparents in her life at all times!

In many ways, the invitation that was extended to me was life-changing!

Through the years, I have continued with DAPS, providing at least two, sometimes three, weekly sessions all over Dallas.  Planning has involved organizing my schedule around the times blocked out for those groups.

What a blessing this experience has been!  I remember so many people, so many gifted people.  I enjoy the relationships and see the power of the work for people with Parkinson’s Disease.

As I organize my thoughts to write, I keep asking myself, “How can I help other people?”

May my words give hope.
